The military continues to be a significant stabilizing impact on the local economy:
- Naval Station Norfolk is the world's largest naval station
- Total direct economic impact on the region is $10.75 billion in FY 2015
- The FY 2015 Navy regional annual payroll (military and civilian) is $8.9 billion
- Consumption in goods and services - $1.67 billion
- Nearly 74,000 active duty Navy and USMC personnel in Hampton Roads in FY 2015.
- Over 49,000 Navy civilian employees in Hampton Roads in FY 2015.
- City continues to be center of activity for the U.S. Navy
In 2014 Norfolk State University was selected as the lead institution in a $25 million cybersecurity education and workforce pipeline initiative. The University is to lead a consortium consisting of thirteen historically Black colleges and universities, the Department of Energy National Laboratories and a public school district. Vice President Joe Biden made the announcement on a visit to Norfolk State where he met with cybersecurity students and held a roundtable discussion with employers and students about cybersecurity. The National Nuclear Security Administration chose NSU as the lead institution, in part because of its academic infrastructure in information assurance and cybersecurity. NSU offers a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in computer science with an emphasis on information assurance. They also offer an online Master of Science in Cybersecurity. NSU has been recognized by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a national center of excellence in information assurance education since 2009.
Old Dominion University has established a Center for Cybersecurity Education and Research (CCSER) to promote cybersecurity research and education in an interdisciplinary setting. The Center serves as a multiple-discipline hub of expertise in the international fight against internet-based crimes. Beginning in Fall 2015 ODU offers a cybersecurity major in the Interdisciplinary Studies degree program, as well as an interdisciplinary minor in cybersecurity, a cyber systems security graduate certificate in the engineering program, and a cybersecurity online graduate certificate in computer science.
Norfolk is the North American Headquarters for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Allied Command Transformation. There are currently 28 member counties in NATO, including Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, The United Kingdom, and The United States.
