Norfolk leads the region in health care facilities, with over 1,200 licensed hospital beds in top ranked facilities. This past year, Sentara Health Care, our largest private employer, was ranked as the most integrated health care system in the nation.

Sentara Norfolk General was nationally ranked in the Top 50 hospitals for heart surgery, diabetes and endocrine disorders, geriatric care and kidney disorders, and Sentara Leigh Hospital, which is undergoing a major expansion, was ranked among the nation’s top 50 hospitals for orthopaedic care.

Fort Norfolk Plaza, a new state-of-the-art class A medical office building located on the Elizabeth River in the Fort Norfolk district, will open in 2010. Signed tenants include Sentara Medical Group with about 65,000 square feet, Cardiology & Arrythmia Consultants with about 22,000 square feet, and some smaller medical practices.  Fort Norfolk Plaza is the first new medical office building in downtown in 40 years.
