From Berkley to Ocean View, from Park Place to Five Points, the Norfolk Arts Commission presents and supports free programs that bring great art to Norfolk communities, and produces Arts Within Reach performances. Now in its eleventh season, Arts Within Reach is a special series of free performances, workshops, and demonstrations in neighborhoods throughout the City. Get to know local artists while you enjoy their talent and creativity in a relaxed atmosphere. You never need a reservation; simply show up five to 10 minutes before show time.

4 (Tues.) 7:30 pm - Contralto Helen Tintes-Schuermann, accompanied by Julio Alexis Munoz, will perform a guest recital, "Spanish Poetry in 20th Century Song" in the Chandler Recital Hall at Old Dominion University's Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.  Sponsored by the ODU Music Department, Tintes-Schuermann and Munoz will also give a mater class at 12:30 pm on Sept. 4.  Both the concert and the class are free and open to the public.  683-4061

18 (Tues.) 7 pm – Opera Insight.  Join Virginia Opera at Norfolk's Harrison Opera House for a free live talk show event that is spicier than Springer, more mesmerizing than Maury, and brings more drama than Rosie! Hosted by Virginia Opera's own undisputed doctor of opera, Glenn Winters, this Opera InSight takes audiences behind the curtain of TWO upcoming productions: "Tales of Hoffmann" and "Pirates of Penzance." 9 (Tues.)  11:30 am - Arts Within Reach.  Virginia Symphony violinist Yun Zhang.  Yun Zhang began his violin studies at the age of three and gave his first public performance when he was five years old.  The recipient of honors and distinctions in two continents, Zhang is the Associate Concertmaster of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.  He has performed regularly in recital and chamber music series throughout the USA and Asia.  With piano accompaniment by Jeffrey Brown; this concert is bound to please students and music appreciators.  Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, 7036 Chesapeake Blvd.  664-4321

16 (Tues.)  10 am - Arts Within Reach.  Virginia Symphony Ensemble in "Big Bad Musical Wolf," a musical experience geared for the whole family.  Arts Within Reach.  This forty-five minute program explores the idea of villains and heroes through stories starring the Big Bad Wolf.  Using special musical arrangements specifically created for this program the flautist, bassoonist, trombonist, double bassist and narrator take us through the stories of the Three Little Pigs, Prokoviev's Peter and the Wolf and a musical story from the Wolf’s point of view entitled B.B. 25  (Thurs.)  11:30 am  - Arts Within Reach.  Eve Watters, Harpist.  With Celtic harp, storytelling, and an array of instruments, Eve Watters celebrates timeless tradition with new spirit and sparkling style, to resonate with all ages.  Tales-with-a-twist interlace with ancient airs, songs in a dozen languages, and historic harps, flute, strings and enchantment.    Mount Zion Baptist Church, 900 E. 27 (Sat.)  Old Dominion University’s Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries opens "Perigee,” work by Stephen Cartwright, with a reception at 7 p.m. Saturday. The reception and exhibition, which continues through Nov. 25, are free and open to the public.  Cartwright’s work explores the physical representation of time and space.   An assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, Cartwright has been included in shows in galleries, art centers and museums throughout the United States.  The Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries, located at 4509 Monarch Way, Norfolk, is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m.

26 (Weds.)  6 pm  - Kwanzaa Celebration at the Attucks Theatre.  The sound of the bell becomes the sound of drums beating. Experience Kwanzaa, a spiritual, festive and joyous African American celebration. Kwanzaa is a time of ingathering for celebration of heritage and achievements, reverence for the Creator and creation, commemoration of the past, recommitment to cultural ideals and celebration of the good. In celebration of Holiday season, the Attucks will recognize Umoja (oo-Mo-jah), one of the seven principals of the celebration of Kwanzaa. 11  (Fri.)  1 pm - Arts Within Reach.  M.S.G. - Acoustic Blues Trio.  Jackie, Merritt, Miles Spicer and Resa Gibbs use traditional instruments, including vocals, blues harp, washboard and “bones,” to preserve and present a style of blues music that originated in the Mid-Atlantic states.  Influenced by ragtime, country string bands, traveling medicine shows, and popular song of the early 20th century, East Coast Piedmont Blues blends both black and white, rural and urban song elements.   Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 255 W. 14 (Thurs.)  1 pm - Arts Within Reach.  Virginia Opera "History Alive!" This musical presentation provides an overview, of not just Virginia History, but also American History. This particular work is a musical telling of Virginia History from Jamestown to present day. This new piece was commissioned by Virginia Opera and written by Glenn Winters, Ph.D., Candi Leibundguth and Jeff Corriveau with the hope of making history fun.   Ocean View Senior Center, 600 E. 19 (Tues.) 7 pm - Arts Within Reach.  Tidewater Guitar Orchestra Ensemble.  The Tidewater Classical Guitar Society was founded 1984 to provide cultural and educational opportunities to those interested in the classical guitar.  The Society presents an annual season of performances by many of the world's best known and most outstanding guitarists and lutenists, while TCGS members perform outreach concerts free of charge to the community.  Members of the Tidewater Guitar Orchestra will present a concert to showcase the exceptional beauty and versatility of the guitar, in a concert of classical and folk music from around the world.   The Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center, 7300 Newport Avenue.  664-4312 

28  (Thurs.)  11:30 am  - Arts Within Reach.  I. Sherman Greene Chorale.  The I. Sherman Greene Chorale started in 1972 when the founder, Isaac Sherman Greene, a music instructor at Norfolk's Booker T. Washington High School, asked some of his former singers to reunite for a Negro History Week celebration. The singers enjoyed the event so much, and the event was so popular, they decided to form a permanent civic group. Now in its 35th year, the Chorale is in demand for recitals and concerts, throughout Hampton Roads and beyond.  Mount Zion Baptist Church, 900 E. Middlesex Street.  664-4321

Feb. 26 (Tues.) 12:30 pm - “Shackles and Chains and Ties that Bind,” a dramatic presentation by Amy Ferebee and Regina Scott Sanford and inspired by the lives and work of two prominent anti-slavery activists and feminists. The two actresses depict Harper, an educated free black from Baltimore, and Grimke, the daughter of a prominent slave-holding family from Charleston. Both historical figures spoke out against slavery at a time when women did not speak publicly. Both were passionate and prolific literary figures working with the likes of well-known abolitionists John Brown, Harriet Tubman and the famous Beecher family. Both helped lay the foundation for later agents of change, some of whom still strive today for human rights and equality around the world. 14 (Fri.) 7:30 pm.  Arts Within ReachUnited States Air Force Heritage of America Band’s Heritage Aire Celtic Ensemble.  Heritage Aire is a component ensemble of the USAF Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base.  Under the direction of TSgt Sherry Burg, Heritage Aire blends a contemporary musical approach with traditional Celtic music style to create a stunning musical tapestry.  The members perform on traditional instruments such as the Irish flute, tin whistles and bodhran.  They also employ acoustic guitar, accordion and clarinet to achieve their unique sound.  Epworth United Methodist Church, 124 W. 18 (Tues.) 10:30 am.  Arts Within Reach.  The Artus Quintet, in concert.  The Artus Quintet (Klause, Najib Wong, trumpets; Jessica Lascoe, horn; Ross Holcombe, trombone; Wei Wang, bass trombone) is a brass ensemble of graduate students from the New England Conservatory of Music.  This concert is presented in partnership with The Virginia Arts Festival.  Epworth United Methodist Church, 124 W. 10 (Tues.)  11:30 am - Arts Within Reach.  Tim and Judith Olbrych, in Concert.  Tim is a classical guitarist and the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society's founding fathers.  His wife, Judith, is an accomplished soprano.  Tim presents a unique recital of classical, baroque and renaissance music for guitar.  He has performed throughout the US in solo, chamber and orchestral settings and has been a featured performer on both radio and television.  He is the founder and past president of the Tidewater Classical Guitar Society and a member of the Performing Artist Faculty at the College of William and Mary.  His wife, Judith, has performed at historic sites throughout Central and Eastern Virginia since 1983.  Together, they create magic.   Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, 7036 Chesapeake Blvd.  664-4321

May 14 (Weds.) 10:30 am Virginia Symphony Ensemble – ‘Celebration of Low Voices.’ Featuring Virginia Symphony musicians Nancy Keevan (cello), Scott Harris (double-bass), Tom Reel (double bass), Laura Leisring (bassoon) and David Savige (bassoon).   Every great ensemble has a solid foundation.  Come hear the instruments that form the pillars of our Virginia Symphony  Orchestra.  The musicians and their ‘low voices’ are known for the way they create mood and rhythm to buttress soaring melodies and a variety of syncopations.  The program features works by well-known composers, including a Rossini duet.  Hosted by the Norfolk Senior Center.  Norfolk Fitness & Wellness Ctr., 7300 Newport Ave.

USAF Heritage of America Langley Winds Woodwind Quintet. Formed in 1997, the USAF Langley Winds woodwind quintet performs a variety of chamber music ranging from Puccini and Bach to the contemporary music of Bacharach and Gershwin.
