From Berkley to Ocean View, from Park Place to Five Points, the Norfolk Arts Commission presents and supports free programs that bring great art to Norfolk communities, and produces Arts Within Reach performances. Now in its eleventh season, Arts Within Reach is a special series of free performances, workshops, and demonstrations in neighborhoods throughout the City. Get to know local artists while you enjoy their talent and creativity in a relaxed atmosphere. 22 (Fri.)  6 pm - USAF Heritage of America Band Langley WindsArts Within Reach.  The USAF Langley winds woodwind quintet presents a unique blend of chamber music, including compositions by Puccini and Bach, to the contemporary music of Baccarat and Gershwin. 26 (Thurs.)  11:30 am - Virginia Opera's "Operation Opera." Arts Within Reach.  Opera, just like great films, drama, literature, fine arts and even sports, makes us feel truly alive by allowing us to experience larger-than-life events," says Glenn Winters, Virginia Opera's Community Outreach Musical Director. (Italian for “most beautiful") is an all-female vocal ensemble performing a wide array of music created for women’s voices.  Bellissima!, founded in 2001, is an auditioned ensemble presenting musical selections that range from classical and contemporary, sacred and secular music to jazz and the folk songs of many countries and from many traditions.  The Selden Arcade, 208 E. This particular work is a musical telling of Virginia History from Jamestown to present day. 2 (Saturday) 9 am - Breakfast with Santa . Kids ages 1 - 92, join the Crispus Attucks Cultural Center for its 1 st Annual Breakfast with Santa at the historic Attucks Theatre. Bring your wish list and watch the magic of Christmas come alive through a child's eye with a hot, delicious breakfast, holiday cheer and visits with Jolly Ol' St. Nick.  There will be three breakfast seating times, starting at 9:00 am , 9:45 am and 10:30am . Pre-registration is required for breakfast and seating is limited, so make your reservations early. 26 (Tuesday) 6 pm - Kwanzaa Celebration. The sound of the bell becomes the sound of drums beating. Experience Kwanzaa, a spiritual, festive and joyous African American celebration. Kwanzaa is a time of ingathering for celebration of heritage and achievements, reverence for the Creator and creation, commemoration of the past, recommitment to cultural ideals and celebration of the good. In celebration of Holiday season, The Attucks will recognize Umoja (oo-Mo-jah), one of the seven principals of the celebration of Kwaanza. 27 (Weds.) noon to 2 pm - Brown Bag Art Series: African Dancing & Drums w/Griot Felix Simmons. Griot Felix Simmons and his troupe have presented programs nationally for 15 years on many facets of African and African-American History. And now they are coming to Selden Arcade to educate and entertain our audience with African History and Folktales, with the accompaniment of African instruments and dance. Jackie Merritt, Miles Spicer and Resa Gibbs write original songs and perform material by artists whose music is in East Coast Piedmont blues style. Influenced by ragtime, country string bands, traveling medicine shows, and popular song of the early 20th century, the East Coast Piedmont Blues style was created when both black and white, rural and urban song elements blended in the diverse urban centers of the Southeast and mid-Atlantic region. This trio of musicians plays with the Virginia Symphony and directs the efforts and aspirations of young musicians through the Hampton Roads Chamber Players. 29 (Sunday) 2 - pm - The Hermitage Foundation Museum , All Hallows Eve, on Sunday, October 29th from 2-7 p.m. This costume optional event includes puppet shows by Fuzz and Stuffing Puppets, face painting, spidery walks through the gardens, mini pumpkin coloring, and much more. Dr. Madblood will perform a magic show. Visitors can participate in creating alloween decorations, masks, creepy cards, and other projects for all ages. Lynn Ruehlmann will tell ghost stories by a fire on our waterfront lawn in the evening.
