2003 ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY

2001 ECONOMIC IMPACT STUDY

In addition to its comprehensive grant program, the Arts Commission manages other programs including Arts Within Reach, Technical Assistance, and Innovator Awards.

Grants are made to support the full season offerings of larger arts organizations as well as projects by community arts groups.  Criteria include effective management and community support for these programs and consideration is given for activities that respond to the cultural needs of Norfolk's ethnic and underserved communities.

Arts Within Reach showcases grantees through free performances in Norfolk neighborhoods--from Berkley to Ocean View, from Park Place to Five Points.  The program began with an audience of 15 in 1997, with the generous support of the Norfolk Economic Development Authority.  During the 2004-2005 season, the series presented 25 programs in six venues throughout Norfolk, including four Saturday morning performances at The Attucks Theatre.  These performances brought the arts to more than 3,600 audience members.  In 2005-2006, venues include the Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center, The Pagoda Garden, Teahouse and Gallery, and the Selden Arcade.

Technical Assistance is provided to grantees and includes Board Development Training, Business Planning Seminars, Grant Writing, and Marketing.  This assistance is meant to encourage good business practices by art organizations.  The Arts Commission also presents Innovator Awards annually to organizations demonstrating creative approaches to revenue enhancement and cost containment.
